Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a major library and cultural center located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. In 2002, Bibliotheca Alexandrina was established as a commemoration of the Library of Alexandria that was lost in antiquity, and an attempt to rekindle something of the brilliance that this earlier center of study and erudition represented.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina is much more than a library. Besides the Main Library and its affiliated Francophone, Depository, and Maps libraries, Bibliotheca Alexandrina offers free online courses in a variety of subjects. In this spirit, the Library of Alexandria has partnered with edX to put its courses online through the edX platform to expand its outreach and become an active promoter of knowledge internationally.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina courses, which include The Journey of Writing and Scripts in Egypt, Ancient Egyptian Civilization, and The Legacy of Islamic Civilization can be audited free, or students can choose to receive a verified certificate for a small fee.
